The Villa Mile: fitness fun for students and faculty

The Villa One Mile – a mile loop around the St. Joseph’s Villa campus – brought students and faculty from all Villa schools together for a fun day of fitness. Everyone had a blast! We’re proud of all our runners.

Fun facts about the mile

  • The word “mile” comes from the Latin word for 1000, mille, because originally a mile was the distance a Roman legion could march in 1000 paces (or 2000 steps, a pace being the distance between successive falls of the same foot).
  • If world-class sprinters were able to maintain top speed for a full mile, they would cover a mile in 2:16 to 2:17.
  • The record for running a mile backward is 6:02.35, by D. Joseph James of India on August 10, 2002.
  • Any time you exercise, you’re going to be burning calories, but the speed at which you run — and your own weight — can affect the number of calories you’ll burn. According to, running at a speed of 5 miles per hour — slightly more than that 13-minute mile — will burn about 606 calories per hour for a 160-pound person, and 905 calories per hour for a 240-pound person.
